Driving Lessons in Rawtenstall

Rawtenstall is the busiest town in the Rossendale Valley, which makes it a genuinely useful place to learn to drive. The town centre gives you traffic to read and react to, the residential streets around it give you room to practise the basics without pressure, and the connecting roads tie the two together.

Daniel Keenan is based in the valley and teaches here every week. Lessons are two hours long, one-to-one and in a manual car, and they are shaped around where you are in your learning rather than a fixed script. Before he was an instructor, Daniel trained to be a history teacher and decided that one-to-one teaching, in the moving classroom of a car, was where he wanted to be.

What lessons here cover

Town centre routes come into play once you are ready for them: busy approaches, queuing traffic, junctions where decisions come quickly. Around the centre there are plenty of residential areas where you can work on clutch control, observation and parking in calmer surroundings. And because the valley's towns sit close together, lessons regularly use the connecting roads that link Rawtenstall with its neighbours - which is exactly the kind of driving you will be doing once you have passed.

A good all-rounder

Some towns suit one particular stage of learning. Rawtenstall suits all of them. Your first lessons can start on the quieter streets while the fundamentals settle, then the centre adds traffic, pedestrians and decision-making, and later still you will spend proper time on the roads running between the valley's towns. Daniel has taught confident pupils, nervous pupils, and pupils with anxiety, ADHD or autism, and each lesson is tailored to the person in the seat.

Your driving test

Practical tests are taken at Nelson Driving Test Centre, where Daniel is generally available between 10am and 1:30pm, Monday to Friday. If you need a different time or a different centre, that can usually be arranged - talk it through with him before you book anything. Tests should only be booked once Daniel agrees you are ready.

What lessons cost

Your first lesson is a starter lesson at £70 for two hours. After that, a standard two-hour lesson is £80, and block bookings bring the hourly rate down - £38 per hour for 10 hours, dropping to £35 for 40. The full table, including the totals for each block, is on the prices page.

Daniel also teaches in Crawshawbooth, Waterfoot, Haslingden and Helmshore.
